On a day worthy of reflection,
thought and community solidarity, the Brooklyn Labyrinth Project
provides a healing, meditative walk in a beautiful public space. A
single winding path draws us in, leads us to the center, and then
returns. To step into the labyrinth is to harness an archetype that
appears distinctively, but unmistakably, all around the world. To
walk the labyrinth is to enter a unique space where our conscious
and unconscious are equal. To engage the labyrinth is to return to
familiar places with new eyes. It is part art and part
experience.
It takes 15 minutes to travel to
the center of the labyrinth, which is 54 feet in diameter. Part of
sharing the experience is watching other walkers in the labyrinth
who look like they are dancing or circling around in a small room.
For each person, their experience is unique -- and sometimes,
profound. At the same time, the labyrinth creates a temporary
community around these private but shared experiences.
We at Cool Water Consulting offer
the Brooklyn Labyrinth on September 11th because the labyrinth is a
healing event. The anniversary of the attacks is still an awkward
day for many people in New York, precisely because our healing was
never undertaken together. We hope the Labyrinth can help. So honor
the day Brooklyn style, in Prospect Park, and enjoy the Second
Annual Brooklyn Labyrinth walk. The labyrinth installation will be
available to the public all day just north of Picnic House on
Prospect Park's Long Meadow.
